Temple of Antinous is the modern revival of the ancient faith dedicated to the restoration of the ancient religion of Antinous, the deified lover of Emperor Hadrian, who was deified after his death in 130 CE. We are devoted to Antinous as a god of beauty, love, self-realization, and gay sacredness. Antinous was a young Greek man born in 130 CE in Asia Minor who became the lover of Emperor Hadrian. Together they traveled the Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire and in Egypt, Antinous drowned in the Nile and was deified. Hadrian founded a new religion dedicated to Antinous, with temples, statues, an ordained priesthood, mystery initiations, sacred games, and a new city named after him. The ancient religion of Antinous endured for over 300 years until it was finally destroyed at the end of the Roman period, but the deification of Antinous was not forgotten. In 2002, Temple of Antinous was founded as the new religion of Antinous based on LGBTQ+ spirituality, based in Hollywood California with other temple chapters in the US and the world. |
